Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program | Faculty

Chairman

Stacy Drury, MD, MPH

Psychiatrist-in-Chief
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

“Throughout my career I have always felt that the greatest achievements we make as academic clinicians is seen when we watch our trainees excel and change the world.  Stepping into the role of Chair of Psychiatry at a time of incredible change, movement forward, and critical need for services has reaffirmed that ensuring the best possible training environment for the next generation of clinicians, scientists and clinician scientists tackling the incredibly complex, yet rewarding, challenge of child mental illness is at the core of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.  The incredible breadth of opportunities for our trainees and the depth of our multi-disciplinary training environment reflects the strength of the entire BCH system.  Beyond this, the evolving roles of child psychiatrists in so many areas of medicine, academics, policy and practice highlights that fact that this truly is the best profession and, for me, the one that I knew would be the most impactful for children, families, communities, and the world.”

Training Directors

Zheala Qayyum, MD, MMSc

Training Director, Boston Children’s Hospital
Assistant Professor in Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

“It is indeed a great privilege to be able to bring the joy of play, curiosity and passion not just into our learning about children and adolescents, but also in our teaching. We hope to foster exceptional clinical skills and thoughtful inquiry in a magnitude of diverse settings, not only to develop well rounded Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists but also develop their particular areas of interest. Our mentors take great pride in investing in our learners so we can bring about the best care for our patients and their families.”

Chase Samsel, MD

Associate Fellowship Director, Boston Children’s Hospital
Medical Director, Psychiatry Consultation Service, Boston Children’s Hospital
Assistant Professor in Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

“Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) training is critical in providing patients, families, teams, and systems with strong clinicians, team members, and leaders. CAPs provide relief to workforce shortages wherever they go and must be dynamic with a diverse skillset to make the most difference in the lives of children and families. Our first year of training provides a great foundation in outpatient and acute psychiatry, while work in the second year hones skills and empowers individuals in their specific niche interests, with an incredible array of flexible electives.”

Instructor in Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

“I have a unique perspective of having graduated from our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) Fellowship and am now the assistant training director as well as an attending psychiatrist in our main Inpatient Psychiatry Service.  Our CAP Fellowship promotes a true work life balance and maintains a family-like culture; everyone presents with unique talents and we hope to help guide individuals to a path of excellence.  Completing my CAP Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital has been the best life decision I have made!”
