In accordance with the requirements of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Boston Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education Department, each Pediatric Anesthesia fellow is required to make suitable progression on a Scholarly Activity project over the course of his/her fellowship.

Metrics for those activities generally satisfy the below descriptions:

1. Abstracts / Posters / Presentations made at professional meetings.
2. Articles published, as identified by their Pub Med identification numbers (PMID)
3. Textbooks, chapters, and reviews
4. Lectures greater than 30 minutes duration (e.g. grand rounds, case presentations) at local, regional or national conferences
5. Documented work on a grant or research project
6. Education-related service on national committees

The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical care and Pain Medicine has established a Scholarly Activity Committee which approves project proposals and oversees Fellow and mentor partnerships by conducting frequent scholarly activity project milestone check-ins over the course of the year. At the end of fellowship, each fellow will be required to submit the final project to the committee for approval and present his/her Scholarly Activity project to our department.

Several scholarly projects have been presented at the regional and national meetings such as the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia, Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society, Anesthesia History Association, Society of Pediatric Pain Medicine and the American Society of Anesthesiology. Fellows have been granted best abstract at the SPA/CCAS. These endeavors have also resulted in publications in journals such as Anesthesia and Analgesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, History of Anesthesia and others.

In order to ensure fellows have sufficient time to successfully make progress on a research-driven project, each fellow is given nonclinical time throughout the year.

Fellow Lecture Series

In addition to the Scholarly Activity requirement, each fellow will give one half-hour presentation on a topic pertinent to Pediatric Anesthesiology, Pain, or Critical Care Medicine, researched under the supervision of the fellow’s advisor and presented once during the course of the year. The objective of the fellow lecture is to cover new developments, research, technology, innovations, and/or controversies in Pediatric Anesthesia, Pediatric Pain Medicine, and Pediatric Critical Care. 

Morning Report

Fellows will participate in the Morning Report case conference series, presenting one half-hour report alongside a faculty mentor. The Morning Report conference is held to review emergent cases and their management during the nights and weekends, times when the resources in the operating rooms may be different then during regular week day hours. By Reviewing those types of cases, the audience will gain a better understanding of the pediatric population and learn best methods of how to appropriately evaluate, plan and manage unexpected patients and procedures on an urgent or emergent basis.
