Division of Perioperative Anesthesiology | Fellowship

Welcome to the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital! We are a large, yet close-knit, Department of dedicated clinicians and educators working in a dynamic hospital environment rich with history and innovation. We offer a range of rigorous clinical and didactic programs, spanning from general, ambulatory, regional and cardiac anesthesia, as well as critical care and pain management.

Our core fellowship year is demanding, rewarding and will allow you to progress from an excellent general anesthesiologist to an expert consultant in pediatric anesthesia.  Our program will challenge and inspire you through clinical experiences, scholarly activity opportunities, and chances to teach other trainees in clinical environments as well as department-wide lectures, preparing you for the wide range of pediatric anesthesia challenges ahead.

Mission and Vision

Mission: We are a Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine that is dedicated to providing care that is safe and of the highest quality to all patients regardless of their means of background.  We teach, learn, and innovate in an environment of respectful collaboration, open discourse, and transparent self-reflection.

Vision: We will advance the specialty of Pediatric Anesthesia by:
– Providing care that is evidence based wherever possible and collect/report new evidence to the best of our ability
– Meeting the needs of a wide range of patients through the creation of innovative care models and evolution of existing systems
– Fostering the next generation of pediatric anesthesiologist through education and attentive mentorship

Fellowship Overview

The Boston Children’s Hospital Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship offers a well-balanced 12 month training program blending clinical training with a robust educational curriculum. It is expected that our fellowship graduates are expert, independent practitioners in the administration of and consultation about pediatric anesthetic and perioperative care. A framework for our Fellows’ success centers on:

Knowledge: the application of expert medical knowledge and judgment in assessing, planning, and solving medical problems associated with pediatric perioperative care.

Skills: proficiency in providing all technical services required in the practice of pediatric anesthesiology.

Attitude: qualitative aspects of professional attitude, characteristics, and traits, which often combine optimism, leadership, resilience, democracy, teamwork and communication.

Scholarship: the talent, training and habits of study necessary for evaluating and appropriately applying new knowledge in pediatric anesthesiology as well as enrich and advance the practice of pediatric anesthesiology and the care of children.

Clinical Training

Clinical training for Pediatric Anesthesia occurs in the Main Operating Rooms, the Cardiac Operating Rooms, Perioperative Care Coordination Clinic, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Pain Treatment Service (including Regional Anesthesia Service) and the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU).

Our typical rotation schedule conforms to the following parameters:

As part of the seven months spent in Perioperative Anesthesia, there is a distinct week-long Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) rotation and an additional 10-12 day-long assignments to the Perioperative Care Coordination Clinic (Pre-Op Clinic). Fellows may elect to participate in Go with the Flow (GWTF), a two-week rotation during which the fellow learns how to administer low flow and closed circuit anesthesia. Additionally, fellows will occasionally be assigned to our satellite location at Boston Children’s Hospital Waltham. 

Vacation Time: Fellows are restricted to requesting vacation during operating room (MOR) rotation months. Each fellow may take up to 20 personal/vacations days. Additionally, fellows are allowed 5 days for meeting days, which can be taken on any rotation with proper approval.

Scholarly Activity Nonclinical Time: Fellows are allocated time for research on his/her Scholarly Activity commitment. This nonclinical time is contingent upon suitable progression of each individual’s Scholarly Activity project’s progress.
