Title: The Data Dilemma: Best practices for collecting demographic and language data across the pediatric life-course

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore the complexities of demographic data collection, including race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The workshop will include collaborative discussion, and participants should come prepared to learn together, in community, from one another. This workshop will be relevant to a broad audience including clinicians, researchers, and administrators by highlighting the importance of accurate data collection for clinical care, research, and quality improvement.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Develop a shared understanding of (a) race as a social construct and (b) identity formation across the pediatric life-course.
    • Discuss best practices for collecting demographic and language information across the life-course.
    • Identify common obstacles in collecting demographic and language data and discuss strategies for overcoming these challenges.

    Workshop 2

Speakers: Dr. Meg Parker and Dr. Sarabeth Broder-Fingert

Title: Conducting Research with Individuals with Marginalized Identities

In this workshop we will review key themes in conducting research with individuals from marginalized communities and identities. We will include case studies for participants to review and discuss.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Describe best practices to include when developing research instruments/approach when including marginalized populations in the study.
    • Appraise methods to recruit of individuals from marginalized populations, who are your research population of interest.

Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to efficiently access data and apply quantitative methods to generate impactful, equity-focused research.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Identify major publicly accessible datasets (cross-sectional and longitudinal) suitable for pediatric health disparities research, including their strengths, weaknesses, and access considerations.
    • Compare analytic methods for characterizing health disparities, including descriptive and association methods, difference-in-differences, and geospatial analysis.
    • Match research questions with the most appropriate data sources and analytic methods to effectively investigate specific pediatric health equity topics of interest.

    Workshop 4

Speakers: Dr. Sabra Katz-Wise and Dr. Snehal Shah

Title: Best Practices for Engaging and Partnering with Communities in Health Research

In this interactive workshop, we will provide an overview of key concepts of community engagement and partnership in research. Then, we will review methods of engaging and partnering with communities in research throughout all phases of the research lifecycle. Finally, we will discuss challenges of community engagement and partnership in research and identify strategies to overcome these challenges. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn from each other about different ways in which communities can be engaged in health research.
