What Babies Need: Perspectives on Culture, Policy, Research, & Intervention

The fields of Early Relational Health (ERH) and Infant Mental Health (IMH) are both multidisciplinary and broad in scope, encompassing areas of inquiry as diverse as the neuroscience of fetal and infant brain development, preventive and therapeutic interventions to support thriving relationships in the first years of life, and the societal factors that contribute to resilience-building communities for children and their families.

Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this educational program, learners will be able to:

1. Connect the advances in the study of early childhood adversity, adaptation and resilience with the consequent implications for public policy.
2. Describe mechanisms of fetal origins of adult health and disease, particularly focused on perinatal mental health and its implications for parents and infants.
3. Identify and convey how one’s own multifaceted identity impacts the relationships practitioners have with the families they serve.
4. Implement basic concepts of self-compassion and strategies for creating attuned connections with patients and clients.
5. Explain how the detailed moment by moment connections and ruptures intrinsic to early parent-infant relationships contribute to long term resilience or vulnerability.
