Description
Overview
This course offers an in-depth exploration of the significance of speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs) understanding of phonology and phonetics. Children with phonological disorders often face challenges that go beyond just speech sound production. These challenges can significantly hinder their literacy and language development, leading to potential issues such as low graduation rates, decreased self-esteem, limited secondary education opportunities, difficulties in future employment, and strained interpersonal relationships.
In this course, we will discuss various theories that underline the role of phonology in speech, reading, spelling, and language development. We will examine the relationship between orthography and phonology, emphasizing the importance of incorporating print in speech sound therapy. A case study will be reviewed to illustrate how our understanding of phonology can inform the selection of appropriate treatment approaches and target strategies. Additionally, we will explore how our knowledge of phonetics can be a valuable clinical tool for choosing therapy words and effectively eliciting sounds in treatment.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
1.Describe the simple view of reading as it relates to speech and language
2. Discuss the reciprocal relation between phonology and orthography
3. Identify one new approach for target selection
Satisfactory Completion Requirement: At the end of this course, learners will share in writing how they plan to incorporate what they have learned into their clinical practice.
