Overview

Pediatric burns are rare but high-risk, and even seemingly minor injuries can escalate quickly. This symposium offers practical guidance for early care to improve outcomes and minimize long term effects.

Course Format

This course will be fully digital and presented via Zoom. The dynamic learning format of the course has been optimized for the virtual classroom.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this educational program, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify key priorities in the first hour of pediatric burn care.
  2. Recognize early interventions for inhalation injuries.
  3. Describe the demands of ICU-level pediatric burn care.
  4. Explain when and why to transfer a pediatric patient to a verified burn center.

In support of improving patient care, Boston Children’s Hospital is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Melissa DiPiro, MSN, RN, CPNP-PC/AC, has been a pediatric nurse practitioner at Shriners Children’s Boston since 2015. She cares for patients with a wide range of burn injuries, from children with small burns in the outpatient clinic to those with large, complex burn injuries requiring intensive care. Melissa is a certified instructor for Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Burn Life Support. Dedicated to continuous learning and improvement, she is passionate about delivering high-quality, compassionate care to pediatric burn patients and their families.
Jonathan Friedstat, M.D., MPH, specializes in burn care along with wound and skin disorders. Coming to Shriners Children’s was a natural decision for Dr. Friedstat, given the hospital’s reputation in burn care and affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital. What Dr. Friedstat most admired about Shriners Children’s Boston is that the hospital is dedicated to burn survivors across the United States and internationally. Shriners Children’s wide reach is particularly meaningful to him because it’s a chance to help children and make a difference in their lives.
Robert Sheridan, M.D., is the chief of staff and director of the burn service at Shriners Children’s Boston. He trained in burns, trauma, and critical care at the Army Institute of Surgical Research and subsequently served in Germany as a triage officer in support of Operation Desert Storm. Upon completion of his active-duty military scholarship obligation, he joined the Massachusetts General Hospital Burn and Trauma Services along with Shriners Children’s, where he has been active in burns, trauma, and surgical critical care.
