Celiac Smarts is an annual education program focused on celiac disease. This month-long series is designed for both healthcare providers and patients, promoting a collaborative understanding of celiac disease management. The program includes evidence-based presentations, interactive case discussions, and practical workshops that enhance clinical competence in diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.

Overview

Celiac Smarts is an annual celiac disease education program. This month-long series for healthcare providers and patients, fosters a collaborative understanding of celiac disease management. The program offers evidence-based presentations, interactive case discussions, and practical workshops that enhance clinical competence in diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.

The integrated program structure enables:

    1. Healthcare providers to strengthen their clinical expertise while gaining insight into patient experiences and challenges
    2. Patients to develop a deeper understanding of their condition and evidence-based management strategies
    3. Cross-community dialogue that enhances both clinical care and patient self-management skills

Session 1 – In person 
Kid-to-Kid: Managing Celiac Disease Away from Home
Led by Teens Rocking Life with Celiac Disease

This interactive session provides practical strategies for children navigating gluten-free living outside their homes, while offering healthcare providers valuable insight into the daily challenges faced by pediatric celiac patients. Our teen leaders share their real-world experiences and successful management strategies through age-appropriate discussions covering school, restaurants and travel.

Session 2 – Virtual
Culinary Medicine: Integrating Nutrition Science and Cooking Skills

Clinical Dietician Jaclyn Quinlan will demonstrate how nutrition science and cooking skills combine to support health management for patients with celiac disease. Through integrated learning, healthcare providers gain tools for patient education while patients acquire practical strategies for implementing dietary changes.

The session format will start with and educational overview, followed by a cooking demonstration. We will conclude with an interactive discussion addressing both clinical and practical implementation.

Session 3 – Virtual
Evolution of Celiac Disease: A Career Perspective with Dr. Peter Green

This session presents a comprehensive examination of celiac disease’s clinical understanding and treatment evolution through the lens of Dr. Peter Green’s distinguished career. Through an in-depth interview conducted by Dr. Jocelyn Silvester and patient advocate Eli Berk, participants will explore the parallel advancement of patient care and research methodologies that have shaped current practice standards. The session illuminates the historical context of today’s treatment approaches while providing insights into future directions in celiac disease management.

The session will include a prerecorded interview with Dr. Green followed by a live panel discussion featuring Dr. Green and Dr. Silvester.

Session 4 – Virtual
Research Roundup: Current Advances in Celiac Disease from Digestive Disease Week

This session presents key celiac disease research findings from Digestive Disease Week (DDW), making cutting-edge research accessible to both healthcare providers and patients. A panel of physicians will analyze and interpret significant abstracts, bridging the gap between clinical research and practical application.

The session format will start with the presentation of the significant celiac disease related topics from DDW followed by a Q&A with an expert panel.

Course Format 

This virtual course provides clinicians with the latest updates and innovations in pediatric healthcare in order to improve patient care and outcomes. The course is formatted to engage learners through lectures, opportunities for application and reflection, and Q&A sessions and to equip participants with the necessary tools to apply their findings in practice.

Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this educational program, learners will be able to:

    1. Strengthen clinical expertise while gaining insight into patient experiences and challenges.
    2. Cross-community dialogue that enhances both clinical care and patient self-management skills.
    3. Evaluate how evidence-based research has informed current clinical practices.
    4. Evaluate new research findings in to identify emerging trends and future directions in celiac disease management.
    5. Understand the integration of research findings into patient care strategies.
